Fleming appointed England Men’s Test coach, Root returns as captain

Michael Vaughan: England Test captaincy could be 'exactly what Joe Root needs'

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the England Men’s Test Head Coach, with Joe Root returning to the captaincy role. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach for the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan, allowing Fleming to spend time with his family before he travels to the UK later this summer to prepare for the South Africa Test tour.

Fleming, who recently departed Chennai Super Kings after an 18-year association, is highly regarded in cricket coaching. He led CSK to five Indian Premier League titles and reached the final 10 times. His coaching experience also includes leading Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men’s competition in 2023, and coaching CSK’s affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, as well as the Melbourne Stars.

As a player, Fleming was New Zealand’s longest-serving Test captain, leading in 80 Tests and securing 28 wins. He also played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he captained Notts to a County Championship title in 2005. He made 111 appearances for New Zealand in Test cricket, scoring 7,172 runs with an average of 40.06.

Root’s Return to Leadership

Joe Root will resume the role of England Men’s Test captain, a position he previously held from 2017 to 2022. During his initial tenure, Root captained England Men in the most Test matches, totaling 65, and secured the most wins, with 27. He briefly returned to the captaincy on an interim basis during the Rothesay Test Series against New Zealand earlier this summer.

Former skipper Michael Vaughan suggested that the return to captaincy could be beneficial for Root, providing renewed motivation in the latter stages of his career. Vaughan noted that Root’s previous captaincy faced challenges, including the focus on white-ball cricket and the impact of the Covid pandemic. He stated that Root was dealt a “dodgy hand” during his first stint as Test captain.

Root himself expressed honour and privilege at being asked to lead the team again, highlighting the rewarding nature of the job despite its difficulties. He looks forward to working with Fleming and helping to build a winning environment for the next generation of players.

Coaching Philosophy and Future Outlook

Stephen Fleming expressed his excitement about joining England as Test Coach, calling it one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He aims to build on the progress made under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, focusing on both immediate wins and the long-term development of the team.

Fleming specifically mentioned his anticipation of working with Joe Root, whom he described as a generational talent, and Harry Brook, emphasizing the importance of helping young talent fulfill their potential. Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, believes Fleming is the ideal choice to guide the team and help turn its potential into a world-class outfit.

Michael Vaughan noted that while some might point to Fleming’s lack of red-ball coaching experience, his extensive background as a captain and coach in the modern game, particularly with Chennai Super Kings, makes him a very experienced choice. Vaughan also highlighted Fleming’s close relationship with Brendon McCullum, which could facilitate a smoother working dynamic between the red-ball and white-ball coaching setups.

Vaughan stressed the need for England to focus on winning games and trophies, suggesting that the team needs to improve its technical batting. He believes that while good leadership is important, changes in the backroom team might also be necessary to ensure players receive proper technical coaching. Fleming’s role will begin after the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan.
